ATHENS, Greece -- The Greek football association has hired Michael Skibbe of Germany as the new national team coach, the fourth man to take the position in little over a year following the country's disastrous European Championship qualifying campaign.
The 50-year-old former Schalke player has coached several major clubs in Germany and Turkey, including Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray.
Greece have struggled since the 2014 World Cup with the departure of Fernando Santos, who left to coach his native Portugal.
Greece lost twice to the Faeroe Islands in Euro 2016 qualifiers and finished last in Group F.
In a statement on Thursday, the Greek Football Association said Skibbe would sign a three-year contract on Friday.
