Christoph Daum: I've been contacted about becoming new Greece coach

Former Bundesliga coach Christoph Daum has claimed that the Greek Football Association (HFF) has approached him about becoming a possible successor to Claudio Ranieri as Greece boss.

Ranieri has been put on "a leave of absence" as Greece coach after a humiliating 1-0 loss to minnows Faroe Islands on Friday.

The shock Euro 2016 qualifying defeat leaves the 2004 European champions bottom of their qualifying group and six points behind Hungary, who currently sit third -- a position that would be enough to secure a place in the playoffs.

"The Greek FA has called me," Daum, who has managed the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart and Fenerbahce, told Express. "They wanted to find out whether I had other commitments. I now wait and see what their plans are."

Daum also revealed that he was already a candidate for the Greece job in the summer, when the HFF was looking for a replacement for Fernando Santos, who did not prolong his contract beyond the World Cup.

"We had good talks. But back then they opted for Ranieri," Daum said.

Daum has been without a job since March 2014, when he was released from his contract by Turkish club Bursaspor.

In 2000, while coaching Leverkusen, Daum was lined up to take over as Germany boss, only for his agreement with the German Football Association to be annulled after hair samples showed that he was a cocaine user.

Daum won the Bundesliga with Stuttgart in 1992 and the Austrian Bundesliga with Austria Vienna in 2003, while he has claimed three Turkish Super Lig titles -- one with Besiktas in 1995, and back-to-back titles with Fenerbahce in 2004 and 2005.
