Girona upset Barcelona to win club's first Catalan Super Cup

SABADELL, Spain -- Cristhian Stuani scored the only goal of the game as Girona upset Barcelona to win the Catalan Super Cup on Wednesday.

Substitute Stuani beat Jasper Cillessen from the penalty spot in the 69th minute to help Girona get their hands on the trophy for the first time in the club's history.

Carles Alena hit the bar late on as Barca pushed for the equaliser which would have taken the game to penalties, but Girona held on in front of a 10,000 sell-out crowd at Sabadell's Nova Creu Alta stadium.

Girona had never previously appeared in the Catalan Super Cup -- which only started in 2014 and features the top two finishing Catalan sides in the Spanish league -- and coach Eusebio picked a strong side for the game against their local rivals. But there was no Lionel Messi for Barca as Ernesto Valverde took the opportunity to give minutes to those players that have not played much during the last month.

Jean Clair Todibo made his debut, while there were also starts for January signings Jeison Murillo and Kevin-Prince Boateng. Samuel Umtiti and Cillessen also featured as they continued their returns from recent injuries.

Malcom was Barca's most dangerous player on the night. The Brazilian has not played a single minute since scoring against Real Madrid on Feb. 6 and he almost opened the scoring when he stung Gorka Iraizoz's hands.

Most of the action was at the other end, though. Patrick Roberts and Anthony Lozano both nearly found the breakthrough for Girona in the first half.

Alex Collado came close for Barca -- who have won the competition twice previously, including last year against Espanyol -- after the break but the game swung when Girona brought on Stuani and Portu.

Collado caught Valery Fernandez in the box as the pressure grew and Stuani, La Liga's third top scorer with 15, struck from the spot.

Barca pushed late on. Alena headed against the bar and Riqui Puig had a goal-bound effort blocked. Cillessen even came up for a late corner as Valverde's side threw everything at Girona to no avail.
