FIFA steps in to replace GFA executive with normalisation committee

World football governing body FIFA will set up a normalisation committee to run Ghana football for an interim period after a meeting with a delegation from the government of Ghana on Thursday.

A FIFA statement said the normalisation committee it will set up "in consultation" with the government of Ghana and the Confederation of African Football will replace the Executive Committee, which was the highest decision-making body of the GFA under former president Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The statement came after a Ghana government delegation led by Youth and Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah met with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and General Secretay Fatma Samoura.

The government of Ghana has also agreed, according to the FIFA statement, to drop its attempt to dissolve the Ghana Football Association after a documentary alleged widespread corruption among senior GFA officials and bribery of referees.

The government of Ghana said it was happy with the outcome of the meeting.

"This is a win-win situation for everyone involved," Deputy Information Minister Pious Hadzide told KweséESPN.

"We can now work with FIFA at ensuring the problems with Ghana football are fixed and that individuals responsible face punishment, while still being a key member of the international football scene."

The FIFA statement did not detail timelines for the establishment of the normalisation committee but suggested it will be primarily responsible for its membership.

"FIFA, in consultation with GoG and CAF, shall appoint persons with integrity and competence to constitute membership of the normalisation committee," said a section of the statement.

Thursday's meeting took place after FIFA issued an ultimatum to the government of Ghana to drop its dissolution attempt against the GFA or face suspension from the body, and effectively international football.
