Ghana defeat World Cup-bound Japan

Ghana secured the most notable win of Kwesi Appiah's second tenure by defeating World Cup-bound Japan 2-0 in an international friendly in Yokohama on Wednesday.

Atletico Madrid's Thomas Partey opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a fine free kick as the Black Stars started the contest strongly

In the 51ts minute, debuting Emmanuel Boateng added a second from the spot after he'd been hauled down in the box.

Boateng was replaced in the 82nd minute by Bayern Munich youngster Akwasi Okyere, who was also making his debut for the national side.

Japan have been drawn into Group H at the World Cup, and begin their campaign against Colombia in Saransk on June 19.

They will then face Senegal in Yekaterinburg on June 24 before facing Poland four days later in Volgograd.

Ghana will face Iceland in another international friendly next Thursday.
