DFB chief Reinhard Grindel wants Germany team to visit more grounds

Germany will play some national team matches at smaller stadiums after crowds declined in recent years, German FA (DFB) president Reinhard Grindel has told Sport Bild.

Joachim Low's Germany side won the 2014 World Cup, but that has not been enough to stem a decline in attendances at some games.

This season, testimonials for captain Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski failed to sell out, and now Grindel wants the national team will play in a wider range of locations.

The DFB will scrap its 40,000-plus capacity rule for home games and Grindel said: "In the future, we also want to go to regions we've not been to for a long time with our national team.

"This means that we plan to depart from the 40,000 criterion for stadiums, but of course only if the conditions in the hospitality, media and security areas are fulfilled."

Grindel added that he was not too concerned by the downward trend of crowds, adding that Germany had played "several well-attended matches" recently.

He said: "We have to wait and see whether the change is because structural changes in the organisation of leisure time, for instance the use of digital media, will become an overall problem for football."
