Ex-Germany U21 international charged with terrorist propaganda in Turkey

Former St Pauli striker Deniz Naki has been indicted by a Turkish court of terrorist propaganda charges and could face between one and five years in prison, according to Turkish news agency Dogan.

Naki, a Kurd currently playing for Turkish third-tier outfit Amed SK, has been charged with terrorist propaganda on social networks on seven counts following investigations by the Kurdish city of Diyarbakir's chief public prosecutor.

The indictment includes a post shared by the former Germany under-21 international in January criticising the military curfew and siege in the Kurdish town of Cizre, with the striker including a picture of a father sitting with two dead children -- an image later revealed as belonging to an incident in Palestine.

Later that month, Naki dedicated his club's 2-1 win over Bursaspor "to those of who have lost their lives and been injured in the 50 days of oppression we face on our lands" in a post on Facebook, relating to the clashes between the Turkish army and Kurdish militants in Diyarbakir.

Naki, 27, has already received a 12-match suspension by the Turkish Football Federation for his posts and was also fined around €6,000.

According to Dogan, the trial is expected to begin in the next few days.

Naki took responsibility for all but one of the posts in his statement in the indictment, adding that his "aim with these posts was to give a message of peace."
