Mario Gotze and Olympic stars named in Germany squad

Germany boss Joachim Low has selected Mario Gotze and three members of the Olympic squad for the games against Finland and Norway, while captain Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to make his farewell appearance.

Germany host Finland in a friendly in Monchengladbach on Wednesday and the German FA (DFB) had already confirmed that Schweinsteiger, 32, would be given the chance to win his 121st and final cap in the match after he decided to retire from international duty.

The Manchester United midfielder will then leave the squad, with Low having selected a further 23 players who will then travel to Norway for the opening 2018 World Cup qualifier.

The squad contains Schalke's Max Meyer, Bayer Leverkusen's Julian Brandt and Hoffenheim's Niklas Sule, who were all part of the Germany squad that won silver at the Olympic Games, as well as Gotze, who has yet to feature for Borussia Dortmund since re-joining the club from Bayern Munich this summer.

Sule has been called up for the first time and Low told the DFB website: "As a general rule you could say that the door to the national team is open."

Low will be without three members of the Germany squad that reached the semifinals at Euro 2016, with Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, Wolfsburg striker Mario Gomez and Manchester City forward Leroy Sane all working on their fitness after injuries.

City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus are all absent.

Low said Schweinsteiger's departure "will leave a gap" but he is looking to establish a squad capable of repeating the 2014 World Cup success, saying: "We've got many established and experienced players, and I know that they will take on even more responsibility, especially for the young players."

He added: "It's our goal to develop a team in the next two years which is capable of defending the title in Russia."
