Germany call up Jonathan Tah to replace Antonio Rudiger at Euro 2016

Germany have called up central defender Jonathan Tah as an injury replacement for Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger was expected to start Germany's opening game of Euro 2016 against Ukraine, with first-choice centre-back Mats Hummels unlikely to be fit in time to feature in that game.

But the Roma defender ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during training on Tuesday and has been ruled out of the tournament.

Germany manager Joachim Low responded to the setback by calling up Leverkusen defender Tah, 20, on Wednesday.

Tah impressed for his club side last season following a transfer from Hamburg in the summer of 2015 and joins Shkodran Mustafi, Jonas Hector, Benedikt Howedes, Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Joshua Kimmich as defensive options in the squad.

Rudiger could be replaced in the starting XI by either Howedes or Mustafi.

"Skhodran Mustafi has some experience," Low told a news conference in Evian. "The other option is to move Benedikt Howedes into central defense. I would trust both. Jerome Boateng and Benedikt Howedes played together in the under-21s."
