Germany boss Joachim Low: I have not written off Mario Gomez

Besiktas striker Mario Gomez still has an international future, Germany coach Joachim Low has said.

Gomez, 30, won the last of his 60 caps for the Nationalmannschaft in September 2014 when they lost to Argentina in a friendly, having struggled for game time at Fiorentina during his final season with the Italian club.

Since moving to Besiktas on a two-year loan in the summer, however, he has impressed and scored a brace in the 3-2 victory over local rivals Fenerbahce at the weekend.

Gomez has scored four goals in six Turkish Super Lig appearances in total and has now resurfaced on Low's radar as a result.

"I've recently chatted to him on the phone, just to see how he feels in Istanbul," Low told Die Welt. "I realised just how well he feels and his goals are a confirmation. He's got a good standing in Istanbul."

Germany have gone without a central striker in many of their recent matches, with Low having played attacking midfielder Mario Gotze up front during the recent Euro 2016 qualifiers against Poland and Scotland.

But Low says Gomez, who last scored for Germany in 2012, could prove to be an option for him again if the striker can continue his good form at Besiktas.

"Mario needs confidence and he's won it back now," Low said. "He also needs a team that tailors its matches around him a bit. I am delighted that things have gone so well for him.

"Regarding the national team, I can clearly say: I have not written Mario off. No way. He's a player who can make the difference. Should he continue to flourish he will become an issue for the national team again, and that's what I have told him."
