Pep Guardiola laments Bayern Munich's Supercup loss to Wolfsburg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola said his side "did everything we could to win the match" after their dramatic late Supercup defeat to Wolfsburg.

Last season's runaway Bundesliga champions led through Arjen Robben until the 89th minute, when Nicklas Bendtner snatched an equaliser.

And Bendtner struck the decisive shootout penalty as Wolfsburg, runners-up to Bayern in the league, lifted the trophy with a 5-4 spot-kick triumph after the 1-1 draw.

The defeat was Bayern's third Supercup loss in a row under Guardiola, who told the club's official website: "Obviously the Bundesliga, cup and Champions League are more important, but a trophy is a trophy.

"It's a shame. We did well and made chances. All my players battled away and covered lots of ground.

"We did everything we could to win the match but congratulations to Wolfsburg, who also did very well."

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer described the defeat as "infuriating" and added: "We played well, but unfortunately dropped our guard in the last minute."

Goalscorer Robben said Bayern "have to look very critically at ourselves, because we should have wrapped it up earlier."

But delighted Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking was left to reflect on a "really terrific, high-paced Supercup match."

He said: "Bayern had one or two clear-cut chances and more opportunities overall. But all in all it was a good game from my team."
