Bayern oust cup holders Wolfsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt stunned

Bundesliga leaders and defending champions Bayern Munich knocked DFB-Pokal holders Wolfsburg out of the cup in the second round on Tuesday night with a comfortable 3-1 win at the Volkswagen Arena.

Douglas Costa lifted his shot over Diego Benaglio and into the top right-hand corner from 25 yards to give Bayern the lead after 15 minutes, and Thomas Muller added a second five minutes later.

Muller wrapped up victory 10 minutes before half-time with a sweet volley from David Alaba's cross.

Pep Guardiola's men could have had more goals too, but appeared to take it easier in the second half, safe in the knowledge their bid for a treble this season remains on track, despite conceding a late consolation from Andre Schurrle.

It was not a good night for several other Bundesliga sides with Eintracht Frankfurt knocked out by second-division Erzgebirge Aue, Max Wegner scoring the only goal of the game in the 74th minute.

Hertha Berlin needed extra-time to get the better of FSV Frankfurt, with Salomon Kalou on target twice in a 2-1 win for the Old Lady.

Mainz appeared to be heading for a place in the third round when an own goal from Christopher Schindler gave them the lead against 1860 Munich, but the game transformed after Pierre Bengtsson was shown a red card on the stroke of half-time.

Goals from Stefan Mugosa and Rubin Okotie saw 1860, who have yet to win in the 2. Bundesliga this season, claim their second top-flight scalp after disposing of Hoffenheim in round one.

Tuesday night's other all-Bundesliga affair saw Darmstadt get the better of Hannover 2-1, with Aytac Sulu and Sandro Wagner on target for Dirk Schuster's men, sandwiching an Artur Sobiech effort for the visitors.

Fourth-division Unterhaching made it a trio of Munich-based clubs in the last 16 thanks to a shock 3-0 win over RB Leipzig, while Bochum edged their all-second-division clash with Kaiserslautern 1-0.

Meanwhile, Nurnberg cruised to a 5-1 victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf with goals from five different players.

Guido Burgstaller, Hanno Behrens, Niclas Fullkrug and Tim Leibold had put the hosts 4-0 up by the break, before Danny Blum made it 5.

The remaining eight fixtures in the second round take place on Wednesday night with last season's beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund facing Stefan Effenberg's resurgent Paderborn and Schalke meeting Borussia Monchengladbach for the second time in four days.
