Leipzig awarded Osnabruck win after DFB-Pokal match abandoned

A German Football Association (DFB) tribunal has awarded Leipzig a 2-0 win over Osnabruck after their DFB-Pokal match was abandoned after the referee was hit by a lighter thrown from the crowd.

Referee Martin Petersen sent the teams off the field in the 71st minute of the first-round match on Monday after being hit by the lighter, thrown from an area of the stands occupied by Osnabruck fans.

Osnabruck were 1-0 up at the time of the incident, and Leipzig had said they were willing to replay the match.

But the tribunal ruled that it had to award Leipzig a 2-0 win because its rules mean that Osnabrueck were responsible for the behaviour of their own fans.

Speaking after the abandonment of the game, Osnabruck's Nicolas Feldhahn told Sport1.de: "We're all sitting in the dressing room and are totally shocked and sad.

"I've never seen anything like it. We're certain we would have won this game. I don't know what will happen now."
