Bayern Munich reach DFB-Pokal quarterfinals, Werder Bremen stunned

Holders Bayern Munich cruised into the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal by beating second-division Eintracht Braunschweig 2-0 on Wednesday.

David Alaba drilled in a superb free kick from the edge of area, firing a left-foot shot into the upper corner in first-half injury time, though the free kick was generously awarded when Arjen Robben fell to the ground after slight contact with a defender.

Mario Gotze scored in the second half to ensure they advanced after dominating the match against a well-organised Braunschweig.

David Alaba's free kick sent Bayern Munich through the the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals.

Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach joined Bayern in the cup's last eight, as did third-division Arminia Bielefeld after a shock 3-1 win over Werder Bremen.

Manuel Junglas scored twice for Arminia Bielefeld, who were relegated from the second division last season and will be the only lower-division side in the quarterfinals.

Bremen's Clemens Fritz got a goal back in the second half before being sent off in the closing stages.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg came through their potentially tricky tie at RB Leipzig with Daniel Caligiuri and Timm Klose on target in a 2-0 win as coach Dieter Hecking showed plenty of respect for the hosts by fielding his strongest team.

Borussia Moenchengladbach won 2-0 at fourth-tier Kickers Offenbach, thanks to a penalty from Max Kruse and Patrick Herrmann's late goal.

Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Freiburg and Hoffenheim all advanced to the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The draw for the quarterfinals is set for Sunday evening, with games to be played on April 7 and 8.
