Veh returned to Stuttgart, with whom he won the Bundesliga in 2007, this summer after spending the past three seasons with Eintracht Frankfurt. However, he suffered an early setback as Bochum's prolific forward Simon Terodde netted either side of the interval for the second division's trailblazers.

Elsewhere, the DFB-Pokal remained true to form with Borussia Dortmund triumphing 4-1 at Stuttgarter Kickers with Marco Reus captaining the Westphalians on his return from injury. Reus missed the World Cup due to ankle ligament damage sustained less than 24 hours before the Germany squad was due to fly out to Brazil.

He was not expected to return until September, but he managed an hour as Dortmund followed up their German Super Cup win over Bayern Munich with victory in Stuttgart, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (two) and Adrian Ramos scoring the goals.

Borussia Monchengladbach beat Homberg 3-1 with summer recruit Andre Hahn among the scorers while Hertha Berlin held off a spirited Viktoria Cologne to win 4-2.

Despite losing Marcelo to a red card, Hannover won 3-1 at Astoria Walldorf while Cologne won comfortably, 4-0 at FT Braunschweig.
