Cologne want to force a rematch after an irregular goal was wrongfully awarded in their 5-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.
Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos put the ball into the net in injury time of the first half following a corner. Initially, referee Patrick Ittrich had blown the whistle after spotting a foul on Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn in the six-yard box, but that call was overruled by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), giving the hosts a 2-0 lead before the break.
The goal, however, was wrongfully reviewed as Itrich had blown his whistle a fraction of a second before the ball had crossed the line.
"Of course, we want to protest [the result]," Cologne's sporting director Jorg Schmadtke told Sky after the match. "It was an irregular decision against the set of regulations, which is why we are seeking for the match to be replayed.
"I'm a proponent of the video review [system], but I'm pleading that things are kept according to protocol. People can't just do as they please."
Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Sky in response: "To protest after losing 5-0 is the strong attitude of a bad loser."
Dortmund had comprehensively outplayed Cologne over 90 minutes, paving the way for the victory as early as the second minute when forward Maximilian Philipp connected with an Andrey Yarmolenko cross to open the scoring.
Sokratis' controversial goal followed in the 46th minute before the hosts continued the scoring in the second half. The VAR intervened a second time in the 59th minute, this time rightfully awarding a penalty after a Cologne defender blocked a shot with his arm in the box.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang converted the penalty and scored a brace just a minute later, and Philipp added another in the 69th minute to round off the scoring.
The result, should it be allowed to stand, sees Dortmund remain top of the Bundesliga on goal difference.
