Borussia Monchengladbach win Rhineland derby; Frankfurt frustrated

Borussia Monchengladbach began their Bundesliga season in style as a Nico Elvedi strike gave them a 1-0 victory at home to Rhineland rivals Cologne.

Gladbach began in dominant fashion but were unable to make a breakthrough in the first half despite openings for Lars Stindl and Raffael.

Cologne began posing a threat of their own on the break, but Gladbach continued to enjoy the majority of the play and grabbed the winner when Ibrahima Traore crossed for Elvedi to finish from close range early in the second half.

Kevin-Prince Boateng made his Eintracht Frankurt debut as a substitute but had to be content with a point in a 0-0 draw at Freiburg.

Frankfurt had the majority of the possession and chances but could not find their way past a stubborn home defence.

Freiburg had a goal ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee in the first half, but their opponents came closest to a breakthrough when Sebastien Haller rattled the bar as the game ended in stalemate.
