Schalke's Markus Weinzierl won't be drawn on penalty call vs. Dortmund

Schalke boss Markus Weinzierl refused to debate the contentious handball incident that might have swung the 150th Revierderby in his team's favour.

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 24th Bundesliga goal of the season was cancelled out by Schalke academy graduate Thilo Kehrer in a 1-1 draw at the Veltins-Arena.

Schalke might have had a chance to win it from the spot had Marc Bartra been penalised for an apparent handball in second-half stoppage time, but the referee was not swayed and the draw stood.

Weinzierl, who recalled Borussia Monchengladbach's frustration when Mark Clattenburg awarded Schalke a controversial penalty in the Europa League two weeks ago, kept his thoughts to himself.

"My opinion on the situation in stoppage time is clear, but I will not say either way," he told Schalke's official website on Saturday evening.

"Two weeks ago [Gladbach boss] Dieter Hecking impressed me very much when he did not mention the handball incident for the penalty. I will do the same today."

Of the match, Weinzierl said: "It was a very intense derby. BVB showed the quality they have, but we gave everything we had and defended well.

"Their goal was made even more sour by the fact that it started with a good chance for us, but after going behind we showed great character in searching for the equaliser.

"It was a hectic match and by the end we were closer to the win than Dortmund. My team really fought. We can be proud of the performance in the second half."

His opposite number Thomas Tuchel, now unbeaten as Dortmund head coach in four Ruhr derbies, felt his side were lucky to avoid sanction at the death.

"It became a very emotional and intense game at the end, and we had a bit of luck on our side that the referee did not blow up for the handball in stoppage time," he said.

"We had control of possession for long spells of the match, but it was tough to find a way through as Schalke stayed very compact and defended resolutely.

"The one time we did manage to get past them in the first half, we took too long with our decision making. In the second half we found more space and deserved to go ahead when we did.

"We did not manage to seal the result after going ahead."

Dortmund are 18 points behind leaders Bayern Munich and, with their title dreams looking dashed, they can focus on beating third-placed Hoffenheim to a Champions League spot.

Schalke, meanwhile, are comfortable in ninth place.
