Hamburg have signed Albania defender Mergim Mavraj from Bundesliga rivals Cologne to boost their chances of avoiding relegation.
Hamburg say the 30-year-old Mavraj signed a deal through June 2019. The club, in the relegation playoff place at the halfway stage in the season, suggested there are more winter signings to come.
Mavraj has made 29 appearances for Albania and played 43 league games for Cologne after switching from Greuther Fuerth in 2014.
"It makes me proud that I'm trusted to help this team," he said in a statement.
Hamburg are the only remaining founding members of the Bundesliga never to be relegated, though they have come close to going down in recent seasons.
