Hertha Berlin move third thanks to Vedad Ibisevic brace, Schalke win

Vedad Ibisevic scored twice before being sent off in Hertha's victory.

Hertha Berlin moved up to third in the Bundesliga on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Mainz.

A brace from Vedad Ibisevic, who in the process brought up a century of Bundesliga goals, saw them recover from falling behind to an Aaron Seydel debut strike to take all three points.

Twenty-year-old Seydel scored with his first shot in the Bundesliga, but he has a long way to go to match Ibisevic's haul as the former Hoffenheim and Stuttgart forward became only the 51st player to go into triple figures in Germany's top flight.

However, the Bosnian blotted his copybook by earning a red card, after Mainz had already been reduced to 10 men through Jean-Philippe Gbamin's dismissal.

In Sunday's other game, Schalke continued their resurgence with a third straight win and a seventh successive game unbeaten.

Sead Kolasinac, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Alessandro Schopf all scored in a 3-1 win over Darmstadt, who had taken the lead through Marcel Heller's first goal of the season.

Choupo-Moting also missed a penalty as Schalke moved up to eighth, now five points adrift of the top six, despite having lost their first five games of the season.

They have not been beaten since then in all competitions, having also sealed their passage to the last 32 of the Europa League on Thursday.
