Douglas Costa to miss Olympics for Brazil due to injury - Bayern Munich

Brazil forward Douglas Costa has withdrawn from the Olympic football tournament in Rio de Janeiro Aug. 5-21 after an injury to his left thigh has not healed in time, Bayern Munich said on Monday.

The club said that due to the lingering injury: "FC Bayern has informed the Brazilian association that Costa can therefore not be released for the tournament."

"I greatly regret this," FC Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a club statement. "We all wanted Douglas to contest the Olympic Games in his home country, but the player's health and fitness takes priority."

Costa, who was examined by the FC Bayern doctors on Monday, will continue his rehabilitation in Munich over the coming weeks, the club said.

Costa, 25, joined Bayern on a five-year contract from Shakhtar Donetsk in July 2015 and enjoyed a successful debut campaign with the German giants, winning the Bundesliga and cup double in Pep Guardiola's third and final season at the club.

He was one of three over-age players named to Brazil's team, which also included Barcelona star Neymar.
