Wolfsburg fined €90,000 for fans throwing flares onto Hannover pitch

A flare is lit during Hannover's meeting with Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg have been hit with a €90,000 fine and a suspended partial stadium closure by the German football federation (DFB) for fans throwing flares onto the pitch at Hannover in March.

Travelling Wolfsburg fans threw flares onto the pitch in the derby at the Niedersachsenstadion, with one landing next to the home side's dugout prior to Wolfsburg's 4-0 win.

Kick-off at Hannover's Niedersachsenstadion was delayed by about 90 seconds as fans also lit flares on the stands of the away section.

On Monday, the DFB announced that it has punished Wolfsburg with a €90,000 fine, the highest fine in the club's history, and also a suspended partial stadium closure, with the probationary period ending on June 30, 2017.

Up to €40,000 can be put towards "security and infrastructure measures as well as the prevention of violence," the DFB said on their official homepage.

Thomas Rottgermann, Wolfsburg managing director of Company Development, Sponsoring and Events, Infrastructure and Organisation, Service, Women's Football, told reporters: "A fine in such regions has never before been imposed on Wolfsburg,"

Rottgermann added that there has been no previous "blatant misconduct" like the incidents in Hannover and that "it should not happen again in the future."
