Markus Weinzierl set to be named Schalke manager after Augsburg exit

Markus Weinzierl is set to be named Schalke's new coach after he announced he is leaving Augsburg this summer.

Although neither club have yet to discuss the rumours, Weinzierl told Germany's Die Zeit newspaper that he is moving on, saying it was "the right decision for both sides."

"We've achieved everything we could possibly achieve together,'' he added. "Now somebody with fresh ideas and fresh vision must take over.''

That is likely to be Dirk Schuster from Bundesliga rivals Darmstadt. It seems only when all three clubs have reached agreements over severance payments, will the respective moves be confirmed.

Weinzierl has made no secret about where he is heading, though, confirming that he is relishing the challenge of coaching Schalke from next season.

"What would you do if you were me? Should I turn it down because I might fail?'' he said. "I know that it's not going to be easy, but what have I got to lose? If it all goes wrong, then I just become one of many who have not succeeded here.

"But it's not going to go wrong because I've been preparing for this for a long time.''

Schalke parted company with their previous coach Andre Breitenreiter on the final day of the Bundesliga season, having already spoken to Weinzierl about taking over.

Augsburg expect a significant compensation payment for releasing their coach, who was still contracted to them until 2019, and that is believed to be the reason why Weinzierl's appointment has yet to be confirmed.

The 41-year-old is said to have long since agreed personal terms with the Gelsenkirchen-based club, who have qualified for the group stage of next season's Europa League.
