Henrikh Mkhitaryan close to Kevin De Bruyne's Bundesliga assist record

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is closing in on Kevin De Bruyne's Bundesliga record of 21 assists in one season.

Mkhitaryan needs to set up one more goal in Dortmund's final two games of the season to match the mark that De Bruyne set while playing for Wolfsburg last season, according to kicker's statistics.

Mkhitaryan has already matched the 20 assists recorded by former Wolfsburg playmaker Zvjezdan Misimovic in 2008-09 and Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery in 2011-12.

The Armenia international, who has just over a year remaining on his Dortmund contract, is enjoying his best BVB campaign to date, having also scored 11 goals in his 30 league appearances under Thomas Tuchel this season.

During his two years under Jurgen Klopp, the former Shakhtar Donetsk man played 59 Bundesliga games, scoring 12 goals and setting up 15.

His fine form has helped Tuchel's side remain alive in the Bundesliga title race, with the club also just one goal away from matching their all-time record of 81 goals in the 2012-13 league campaign.

Kicker, Germany's only weekly football magazine, credits players with assists when they win penalties and if teammates score on the rebound, in addition to any pass to a goal scorer.

The publication's assist records date back to 1988.
