Wolfsburg's Julian Draxler out with thigh injury ahead of Euro 2016

Wolfsburg midfielder Julian Draxler sustained a thigh injury in his club's 3-0 defeat at Real Madrid, coach Dieter Hecking has confirmed, leading to concerns about his availability for Euro 2016.

Draxler, 22, led Wolfsburg to a 2-0 win in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid with an excellent performance.

In the return leg at the Bernabeu, the Germany international needed to be withdrawn with a thigh injury by Hecking just over 30 minutes into the tie.

Andre Schurrle moved to the wing, and Max Kruse took the former Chelsea player's role in central attack.

The loss of the 2014 World Cup winner limited Wolfsburg's chances of progressing to the next round.

Already down 2-0, Wolfsburg were unable to play the quick counter-attacks which made them so dangerous in the first leg.

Wolfsburg were eliminated by Real Madrid, and on Thursday coach Hecking confirmed on his prematch news conference for the Bundesliga match at Bremen that Draxler will "miss the next matches because of a muscle bundle tear" in his thigh.

The injury could not only end Draxler's Bundesliga season, but also harm the former Schalke player's hopes of playing at Euro 2016 for Germany.
