Robert Lewandowski brace carries Bayern; Hamburg rally past Gladbach

Bayern Munich restored their eight-point advantage at the top of the Bundesliga with a comfortable 3-1 win at Bavarian rivals Augsburg on Sunday.

Robert Lewandowski's 20th and 21st goals of the season got Pep Guardiola's men on their way to yet another victory, with Thomas Muller completing the scoring.

Bayern took the lead with their first glimpse of goal, Lewandowski stepping over the ball before dispatching it clinically into the bottom left-hand corner of Marwin Hitz's goal.

In the second half, Thiago Alcantara played a perfect ball into the path of the Pole, who had plenty of time to compose himself and pick his spot in the far corner.

Muller added a third for Bayern with Douglas Costa intelligently squaring for the German rather than shooting from an angle.

Augsburg barely threatened a goal until Raul Bobadilla struck a late consolation, leaving them just a point clear of the bottom three in preparation for the visit of Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday.

A day after losing Holger Badstuber to a broken ankle in training, Bayern's injury worries continued when Arturo Vidal had to be withdrawn after taking a knock to the head and David Alaba spent a spell on the sideline after appearing to lose a tooth in a clash.

Hamburg ended their six-game wait for a win by coming from behind to beat Borussia Monchengladbach 3-2.

U.S. international Fabian Johnson gave the Foals a 14th-minute lead, just seconds after Josip Drmic had failed in a one-on-one situation with Yann Sommer.

Lewis Holtby somewhat embarrassingly did not go for goal with only Sommer to beat minutes later, electing instead to square the ball, but making a mess of his pass before holding his head in shame.

It did not ultimately matter, though, as Martin Hinteregger diverted Gideon Jung's wayward shot into his own goal after Cleber had hit the crossbar and Artjoms Rudnevs drilled in a second before half-time.

Ivo Ilicevic added a third for Hamburg late on, but they had to cling on after Raffael set up a grandstand finish with his ninth goal of the season with two minutes of normal time left.
