Borussia Dortmund's Aubameyang targets Gerd Muller's 40-goal record

Borussia Dortmund's in-form striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has a firm eye on legendary Gerd Muller's German Bundesliga record, having reached the 20-goal milestone so far.

The prolific marksman netted both goals in Dortmund's 2-0 win over Ingolstadt at the weekend, to help his side maintain the eight-point gap to league leaders Bayern Munich.

Having taken only 19 games to hit an impressive 20-goal total, Aubameyang is two goals ahead of Muller's tally at the same stage during the 1971-72 season, where he went on to finish the season with a record 40 goals.

"I still need to score 20 goals to do it, right?" he told Ruhr Nachrichten. "That's a lot, but in football you never know."

The forward revealed that coach Thomas Tuchel and him have an ongoing wager, and that he hasn't fulfilled that bet made before the season started.

"It's true I've achieved my goal, but I haven't yet managed to fulfil my bet with the coach, you'll have to be patient," he added.

And while Bayern and Dortmund continue their title rivalry, Aubameyang is refusing to allow the top scorer sideshow between him and Robert Lewandowski -- he is three goals ahead of the Polish strilker -- get in the way of the club's ambitions.

"It doesn't interest me at all whether Lewandowski is before or behind me," he said. "The important thing is that I score goals for the team and we win. It will all be tallied up at the end."

Aubameyang was also quick to refute claims that his first goal against Ingolstadt -- when he headed in from Lukasz Piszczek's cross -- was offside, even though referee Guido Winkmann admitted after the game that he did make the wrong call.

"At that moment, I didn't see I was offside, I just headed the ball in. We have conceded four goals this season which were offside, so things balance themselves out." the striker added.

The Dortmund forward's next chance to add to his goal tally will be on Saturday when his team travel away to take on Hertha Berlin while their rivals Bayern face a tough battle away to Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena.
