Dortmund call for instant replay after referee admits opener was offside

Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels and manager Thomas Tuchel both expressed support for an instant replay system after the referee admitted the club's opening goal in Saturday's 2-0 win should have been whistled for offside.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finally broke the deadlock against Ingolstadt with just over 10 minutes remaining, heading in Lukasz Piszczek's cross from six yards out, albeit from an offside position.

The goal stood even after the missed call was apparent from the video shown on screens around the Westfalenstadion, and referee Guido Winkmann said there was nothing he could do about the error.

"The fact is that BVB's opener was offside. The fact is that it decided the match," Winkmann said, according to Dortmund's website.

"Ingolstadt were affected three times today, so there's a lot of furore. Even if I see the player was offside on the video screen, I am not able to change my decision retrospectively."

The visitors were already angry after first-half penalty shouts were ignored and an Ingolstadt goal was disallowed, and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said: "The offside goal was the final straw. Everyone could see that it should not have been allowed.

"The referee needs to be able to rely on his assistants in such situations. The fact that we take no points from this game really angers me."

Hummels sympathised with his opponents and said he would support the introduction of a system to review controversial plays.

"I can understand why Ingolstadt are annoyed," he said. "They conceded a goal from an offside position that was then shown up on the big screen.

"I'm very much in favour of instant replays. It is very important that only goals that should stand do. Under such circumstances, I think 10-15 percent of decisions would be different."

Tuchel agreed with his captain, saying: "I believe that the referee did not see the replay of our first goal, but he is not able to change his decision retrospectively anyway. I am very much an advocate of reviewing all goals."
