Rafinha admits interest in playing for Germany

Bayern Munich defender Rafinha said he would be willing to try solving Germany's trouble at right-back if he is given citizenship in his adopted homeland.

The Brazilian, 30, moved to Schalke as a 19-year-old in 2005 before returning to Germany to sign for Bayern in 2011 after spending a year in Italy with Genoa.

The player withdrew from the Brazil squad in September and later this month he is due to sit an exam as part of the process of obtaining German citizenship.

Rafinha played twice for Brazil at senior level, in March 2008 and March 2014, but neither was a competitive match.

Germany manager Joachim Low told kicker and Suddeutsche Zeitung in August that Rafinha was not in his plans.

But with right-back a problem position for the world champions, Rafinha says he would be pleased if Low changes his mind.

"Yes,' he told kicker. "Why not? We'll see what happens. I'd be happy."

Rafinha maintains that the principal reason he has for applying for German citizenship is because he and his family want to stay in Munich once his career is over.

But some German media outlets see the former Coritiba player as an obvious successor to his Bayern teammate Philipp Lahm, who retired from international football after captaining Germany to World Cup success in 2014.

Low tried out several players at right-back shortly after that tournament including Kevin Grosskreutz, Antonio Rudiger and Sebastian Rudy.

Liverpool's Emre Can started there for Euro 2016 qualifying wins over Poland and Scotland in September. However, this month Borussia Dortmund's Matthias Ginter was given the role for games against Republic of Ireland and Georgia.

Rafinha, who won a bronze medal with Brazil at the 2008 Olympic Games, turned his back on the chance to earn another cap for his native land in their World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela this month.

He said he grew tired of being overlooked by the Selecao and preferred to concentrate on his club football if he was only going to be Dunga's "fourth choice."

"It's not that I don't want to play," he told kicker."But I'm now in my fifth year at Bayern and I've been playing at a high level since my time at Schalke.

"In the last few years we've won everything at Bayern and I've started regularly.

"And despite that I've never been an option for the national team -- never been called up twice or three times in a row.

"Coach Dunga has been in the job for about a year now and he hasn't called me either."
