Charles Aranguiz tears Achilles tendon ahead of Bayer Leverkusen debut

New Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Charles Aranguiz has torn his Achilles tendon and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Chile international Aranguiz, 26, joined Leverkusen from Internacional on Aug. 13 in a deal reported to be worth €12 million plus add-ons.

Having been an unused substitute in the club's first two games this season, Aranguiz was expected to make his debut against Hannover on Saturday but he now faces several months on the sidelines after suffering an injury in training on Thursday.

Leverkusen have confirmed that Aranguiz will undergo surgery in Basel on Tuesday.

"We have all been hit hard by the news of the injury and are suffering with him," Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller said on the club's official website. "Charles was so much looking forward to his first Bundesliga match at Hannover. We will do all we can so that Charles will return as soon as possible after this serious injury."

Kicker suggests that Leverkusen could look to sign either Sebastian Rode or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on loan from Bayern to cover for Aranguiz's absence.

Leverkusen, who beat Leicester to the signing of Aranguiz, started their Bundesliga campaign with a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim but lost 1-0 to Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League playoff.
