Anthony Ujah triggers release, leaves Cologne for Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen have signed Nigeria international Anthony Ujah from league rivals FC Cologne, both clubs confirmed on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old attacker triggered a release clause and joins Bremen on a four-year-deal.

Ujah has been a key for Cologne in their first season after returning to the top flight. The Nigerian attacker has featured in all but one league game for the Billy Goats and has scored 10 goals, a third of the club's season total of 30.

However, the Nigerian, who joined Cologne from Mainz in 2012, has now activated a clause in his contract, which was to expire in 2017, and will sport the Werder Bremen jersey in the new season.

"The 24-year-old striker will leave FC Cologne on his own wish and join his new teammates at Werder Bremen to start the next season," Cologne said in a short statement on their official club website.

Werder Bremen also confirmed the signing of the Nigerian forward and said on their website that Ujah has already signed a contract through to June 2019.

"He is quick, dangerous in front of the goal, and continue his development here," said the club's sporting executive Thomas Eichin.

Ujah is set to replace youngster Davie Selke in Bremen's attack, with the German youth international announcing his transfer to RB Leipzig a few weeks ago.

The future of former Wigan attacker Franco Di Santo remains unclear. The Argentine is under contract at Bremen until 2016, and has been linked with a move away from the Weserstadion.
