Berti Vogts: Don't play Fabian Johnson out of position

Azerbaijan boss Berti Vogts has warned Borussia Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre not to play right-back Fabian Johnson out of position.

Johnson, 26, joined the Foals on a free transfer from Hoffenheim in the summer, but has yet to secure a regular position in the team.

While the U.S. international started both Europa League qualifiers against FK Sarajevo, he was only used as a late substitute in Monchengladbach's first two Bundesliga games.

Although Johnson started one match at right-back, he began the other on the left of midfield, while in the league he came off the bench to replace midfielders -- something Vogts, United States' assistant coach at the World Cup, does not understand.

The Monchengladbach legend, who has been in charge of Azerbaijan since 2008, told Bild: "Left-midfield is not Johnson's position, he might have three touches of the ball in 90 minutes there. He is a right-back.

"He has to play on the right to play to his strengths. He was one of the best players at the World Cup in this position and he belongs among the best right-backs in the Bundesliga."

The former Germany boss added: "You have to get used to him first. And he needs to learn to give it his all in training. But on the pitch he has great speed and a fantastic finish."
