Dortmund and Germany star Marco Reus set for month on sidelines

Marco Reus is set to spend around four weeks in rehab after suffering an ankle injury during Germany's 2-1 victory over Scotland, Borussia Dortmund have announced.

Reus, who missed the World Cup with a partially torn ligament in his left ankle, suffered a repeat of the injury during Sunday night's Euro 2016 qualifier.

The attacking midfielder hobbled off the pitch late on after looking to pull away from a challenge from Charlie Mulgrew, before then being replaced by Matthias Ginter.

A statement on Dortmund's official website read: "Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus injured his left ankle in the European Championship qualifier against Scotland on Sunday night.

"BVB club doctor Markus Braun diagnosed partially torn ligaments in his ankle, and a sprain of the tarsal ligaments. Borussia Dortmund expect a four-week long rehabilitation phase."

Reus is set to miss Dortmund's Champions League clashes with Arsenal and Anderlecht this month, as well as the Bundesliga games against Freiburg, Mainz, Stuttgart, Schalke and Hamburg.

There had also been a concern about the fitness of midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was substituted during Armenia's 2-1 Euro 2016 qualifying defeat to Denmark on Sunday.

However, Dortmund confirmed on their official Twitter account on Monday that "Mkhitaryan is set for normal team training."

Reus' injury could lead to a return to the Dortmund team for Shinji Kagawa in Saturday's Bundesliga match against Freiburg.

Last week, the Japan international re-signed for the club following two years at Manchester United, where he struggled to break into the first team on a consistent basis.

"You could see the relief in his face. I think that it was not an easy situation for him at Manchester in the past weeks," Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Kehl told reporters about Kagawa's return on Sunday.

"All of that, in the end, led to him returning to Dortmund. He gets a lot of confidence here, and he will gain everything that he has been missing in the last months here."
