Referee pulls handgun during dispute in amateur game in Brazil

A Brazilian referee faces disciplinary action after he pulled out a handgun during a dispute with players.

Gabriel Murta, who the state football federation said is also a police officer, was reportedly kicked and slapped during an amateur game last weekend outside of Belo Horizonte, while a manager ran on the pitch to demand a red card.

Video footage showed the referee then brandishing a gun while his linesman restrained him.

Local referees' association chief Giuliano Bozzano said the Minas Gerais Football Federation would meet with Murta and had summoned a psychologist.

"On the basis of that conversation and his account of events and the results of the psychological assessment I'll decide what if any measures to take," Bozzano said.

"What's happened is obviously not a common occurrence and I don't want to rush into anything.

"At the moment it happened he's opted for getting his gun because in his view it was a question of controlling a situation."
