Policeman, ex-policeman detained in Corinthians fan group murders

SAO PAULO -- Authorities say a policeman and a former policeman have been detained by officials investigating the killings of eight people at the fan club of a popular Brazilian soccer club.

The two men detained on Thursday will be interrogated in connection with the April 18 attack at the headquarters of Corinthians' Pavilhao 9 fan group.

Police have dismissed the possibility that fan rivalry played a role in the attack, and said a dispute over drug dealing may have led to the raid on the eve of the team's match against rival Palmeiras.

Witnesses say three gunmen stormed the gritty site where the soccer aficionados meet underneath a highway overpass, and shot seven people in the head. An eighth man ran to a fuel station after being shot but died later.
