Robert Lewandowski nets winner as Bayern beat Real Madrid
Robert Lewandowski scored a late winner as Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in the final of the Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
The Poland international stole a march in the penalty box and tapped home Douglas Costa's free-kick from out wide with two minutes left on the clock to hand Pep Guardiola's team victory in the pre-season match.
Real stars Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo did not play and the Spanish side missed their authority and attacking flair against their German opponents.
It was a game of few chances but Thomas Muller almost put Bayern ahead in the second minute only to drag his low shot wide.
Other than that, scoring opportunities were at a minimum during the first half of the match.
David Alaba forced a good save from Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas from 35 yards shortly before half-time, with the Austrian's low strike heading for the bottom corner before Navas' low dive tipped it away.
Costa drilled narrowly wide of the post as the clock ticked down but there was still time for Lewandowski to win the game in normal time and avoid penalties as he tapped in from the set piece in the 88th minute.
Earlier, Tottenham took third place in the tournament after goals from Nacer Chadli and Tom Carroll saw them defeat AC Milan 2-0.
