Bastia's Brandao could return to action against Paris Saint-Germain

Bastia forward Brandao could make his return to action in Saturday's Coupe de la Ligue final against Paris Saint-Germain six months after his head-butt on Thiago Motta.

Brandao, 34, was given a six-month ban by the French Football League after he was pictured by TV cameras head-butting PSG midfielder Motta in the players' tunnel at the Parc des Princes following Bastia's league defeat in the capital on Aug. 16.

He then sustained a thigh injury that sidelined him beyond the end of his suspension, which expired in February, but the former Shakhtar Donetsk man is now fit again and could play his first competitive match in the showpiece at the Stade de France this weekend.

"He's in the squad of 20 players who will leave for Paris," Bastia coach Ghislain Printant told RMC. "We can only use 18 players. I'll make my choice after the final training session at the Stade de France.

"Physically, he has worked very well. If he is part of the squad, he's capable of meeting our expectations, even if he is lacking competition sharpness. It'll be up to me to decide whether or not he's in the 18, whether he starts the game or whether he's on the bench."

After a successful two-year spell with Saint-Etienne, for whom he scored the winning goal in the 2013 Coupe de la Ligue final, Brandao joined Bastia last summer when Claude Makelele was in charge but he featured in just two league games before being banned.

Brandao's assault left Motta with a broken nose, though the midfielder missed just a single game due to the injury. The Italy international will, however, be absent from Saturday's encounter due to a thigh injury sustained in last weekend's league win at Marseille, a problem which will also mean he sits out next week's Champions League quarterfinal first-leg tie with former club Barcelona.

PSG boss Laurent Blanc has said he could field his reserves against Bastia due to a fixture pile-up.
