Coupe de France final to be played on a Tuesday next season

The Coupe de France final will be played on a Tuesday next season, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has announced.

The controversial move has been taken partly due to the need to shorten the campaign to release players for the 2018 World Cup, but also due to the decision not to schedule fixtures for Saturday, May 5.

That date has been kept free in memory of the victims of the Furiani disaster on May 5, 1992, when a collapsed stand at Bastia's home ground resulted in the deaths of 18 spectators.

The Coupe de France final has therefore been scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, with league matches taking place the following two weekends before the season ends, with second-leg promotion and relegation playoffs on Sunday, May 27.

Acknowledging the tight end-of-season schedule played a part in the decision, LFP director general Didier Quillot said in L'Equipe: "Also, we will not be playing on May 5 following an agreement between the LFP, the FFF [French Football Federation] and the secretary of state for sport Thierry Braillard.''

A proposal to move English FA Cup ties to midweek slots was last month rejected out of hand by the Football Association, resulting in the end of discussions on proposed Football League reforms branded the "Whole Game Solution.''

The 2017-18 Ligue 1 season will begin a week earlier than this campaign, on the weekend of August 4-6, at the request of France coach Didier Deschamps.

"He wanted the international players to have several weeks of competitive games before France-Netherlands [on Aug. 31],'' Quillot said.
