Stranded France boss Didier Deschamps misses World Cup gathering

France coach Didier Deschamps missed the start of the World Cup workshop in Russia this week after being caught in bad weather, reports in the French media said.

Deschamps had been due to join the France delegation for the start of a two-day gathering in the Black Sea resort of Sochi on Tuesday.

However, the 1998 World Cup-winning captain was stranded at snowbound Nice airport.

In Deschamps' absence, assistant coach Guy Stephan will be tasked with discussing the relevant sporting matters, notably the steps involved in providing FIFA with the final 23-man squad for the tournament, RMC reported.

The workshop brings together representatives of all 32 participating nations to discuss preparations for the tournament.

Working groups focused on the logistical, medical, security and marketing aspects of the competition are also meeting.
