Antoine Griezmann 'happy' for Paul Pogba after winner vs. Netherlands

France forward Antoine Griezmann was "happy" for teammate Paul Pogba after the midfielder's decisive goal in Les Bleus' 1-0 defeat of the Netherlands in World Cup qualifying.

Pogba, who joined Manchester United for a record fee this summer, has struggled to find top form since moving to Old Trafford. But he quieted some of his critics with a sensational 30-yard strike that beat Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on Monday.

And Griezmann reckons the goal will provide Pogba a much-needed boost of confidence going forward.

"I'm happy for him," Griezmann told TF1 after the match.

"He played the same as against Bulgaria [a 4-1 win on Friday], except here it had a purpose. Tomorrow he will make all the newspapers. This will do him good.

"I hope he will have the support of journalists."

France coach Didier Deschamps voiced his pleasure with not only Pogba's goal, but with his all-around play on the day.

"Paul was decisive tonight,'' Deschamps said. "Not just because of his goal, but also by winning the ball in midfield and distributing well.''

Netherlands boss Danny Blind acknowledged his goalkeeper should have done better on the goal.

"Maarten knows that he would usually save that [Pogba shot] with one hand in training," Blind said.

France's defeat of the Netherlands was the Dutch side's first in a World Cup qualifier since 2001 -- a span of 34 matches.

Griezmann hailed the historic result in Amsterdam.

"We wanted to take the three points. It was a good first half, then we tried to defend well," the Atletico Madrid man said

Undaunted by his side's setback in Amsterdam, Blind added: "We've only played three out of 10 qualifiers.

"We are only three points behind France, so it is not over yet."
