Mathieu Valbuena laments 's---' 2015-16 season after missing Euro 2016

Lyon midfielder Mathieu Valbuena has described last season as "s---" after he was the victim in an alleged blackmail case and then missed Euro 2016.

Valbuena, 31, endured a tough season after the alleged attempt resulted in France teammate Karim Benzema being charged with conspiracy to blackmail in November. Benzema denies any wrongdoing.

Injuries and a loss of form also contributed to Valbuena being left out of the France squad for the Euros by coach Didier Deschamps.

Meanwhile, reports suggested he had not settled at Lyon and could be allowed to move on in the summer window, when he was linked with a move to Fenerbahce.

He told Stade 2: "It was a s--- season.

"I watched all the [Euro 2016] games. I was gutted, it annoyed me, because it was in France and we were so close.

"For me, the French national team isn't finished. At least, not like this in any case."

Confirmation that Valbuena -- who has made more than 50 appearances for France -- would not play at the Euros came in May, and he said that "whatever the reasons, sporting or non-sporting, justified or not, my non-selection is a huge disappointment."

He told Stade 2 he was also disappointed by his club situation, adding: "People spoke too much about me, about the fact I didn't settle into the Lyon dressing room or that I had refused to shake the hand of [Lyon president] Jean-Michel Aulas after a game, which wasn't true.

"I also heard Lyon played better when I wasn't there, even though we played well when I was."
