Karim Benzema offered no guarantees on France return by FFF chief Le Graet

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet has admitted that there is no guarantee that Karim Benzema will represent his country again.

Benzema, 28, was left out of France's squad for Euro 2016 after he was charged with conspiracy to blackmail as part of an alleged attempt to extort funds from his international teammate Mathieu Valbuena using a sex tape.

The Real Madrid striker further isolated himself days before the competition started when he accused his manager Didier Deschamps of bowing to pressure "from a racist part of France".

Speaking at a post-tournament news conference on Tuesday, Le Graet said that the Euro 2016 hosts could be "extremely satisfied" with their performances despite losing 1-0 to Portugal in Sunday's final.

When quizzed on Benzema's future, however, the 74-year-old was less positive than before.

"There's an ongoing case," he told reporters. "It's not a coin in the air -- we have to see how the case develops.

"I've always thought he was a good player. He's not banned for life because that's not in my nature. But then the manager always has the possibility of not taking a guy, even if he's not suspended, in the name of the life of the group."

Benzema was barely mentioned once Euro 2016 got underway since Antoine Griezmann emerged as the Player of the Tournament and top scorer, while Dimitri Payet and Olivier Giroud also weighed in with three goals each.

Former France midfielder Emmanuel Petit felt Deschamps' side did not miss the ex-Lyon forward and believes it will now be difficult for Benzema to return.

"I've defended Karim Benzema but at the moment it's difficult to defend the indefensible," Petit told RMC. "You also have to ask the question of the public, the sponsors.

"I think that there was a split with Karim Benzema, with the sextape case and his comments just before the Euros. I think a lot of players and the manager were hurt by these statements.

"I know there's a lot of clumsiness in his communication but I never felt any repentance, especially in the sextape affair. That bothers me considerably."
