Fan says he is 'traumatised' by Mathieu Valbuena confrontation

A France fan says he has been left "traumatised" by a physical altercation with Mathieu Valbuena at Toulouse airport.

France Football reported on Wednesday that Valbuena, 31, reacted angrily when provoked by a man who was recording the players' arrival at Toulouse airport last Friday.

And Lyon have subsequently confirmed that Mathieu Valbuena was involved in an altercation with a man who was filming the team ahead of their game against Toulouse last weekend.

The man was reportedly commenting on what he was recording so that he could show the video to his son later that day.

When Valbuena passed, he said: "You see, there's the person who's the reason that Karim Benzema is not playing the Euros."

According to the man, named only as Youssef, Valbuena snatched the phone out of his hands and threw it to the ground.

"Certainly I was clumsy in what I said to him and I spoke a bit too loudly, but Valbuena lost his cool," Youssef said.

Having failed to get an apology at the team hotel, Youssef reported the incident to police the following day.

France Football said that when contacted Lyon had acknowledged that Valbuena had thrown the phone and that security were forced to intervene.

However, they defended the player by saying he was provoked by someone whose behaviour was "disrespectful and inappropriate."

Youssef told France Football that "at the very least" he expected to get an apology from Valbuena and be reimbursed for the damage to his phone, which he said was no longer working.

The father of three, who was able to visit the airport because he is no longer working on health grounds, said he had been left "traumatised" by the incident.

In November, Real Madrid striker Benzema was charged with conspiracy to blackmail over an alleged attempt to extort money from Valbuena using a sex tape.

Earlier this month, the French Football Federation announced that Benzema would not be selected for Euro 2016 as a result of the ongoing investigation.
