France coach Didier Deschamps coy on Karim Benzema importance

France coach Didier Deschamps refused to be drawn on whether the impressive firepower at his disposal means Karim Benzema is not as vital to their chances of winning Euro 2016 as first thought.

Benzema, 28, is currently suspended from the national team. In November, he was charged with conspiracy to blackmail as part of an investigation into an alleged attempt to extort money from France teammate Mathieu Valbuena using a sex tape.

The Real Madrid striker has found the net 24 times for his club this season but France have coped comfortably without their main frontman until now. The Euro 2016 hosts followed up a 3-2 win over Netherlands last week with a 4-2 victory against Russia in another friendly at the Stade de France on Tuesday.

Deschamps has been boosted by the return of Dimitri Payet and Andre-Pierre Gignac, while Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman also chipped in with an eye-catching substitute appearance against Russia that was capped by a stunning first international goal.

Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann has also been in excellent form, while Arsenal's Olivier Giroud and Man United's Anthony Martial have impressed, meaning Les Bleus' attack looks extremely potent ahead of their opening Euro 2016 group match against Romania on June 10.

After Tuesday's game, Deschamps was asked whether Benzema's return was really necessary.

"I was expecting that one," the former France captain said at a postmatch news conference. "We need to talk about the players who were there -- Kingsley, Dimitri, Dede [Gignac], Olivier [Giroud] and Anthony [Martial.]

"For the rest, we'll see later. We shouldn't mix everything up. I have players with different profiles who can play in different positions. What's important is to remain dangerous and effective."
