Karim Benzema's return to France squad opposed by sports minister

France's sports minister Patrick Kanner is not in favour of Karim Benzema returning to the national team.

The Real Madrid forward learned on Friday that he had been cleared to once again meet with Mathieu Valbuena, the Lyon playmaker and France teammate he stands accused of blackmailing over a reported sex tape.

Benzema denies the allegations and was released from custody in November, but the ban on seeing Valbuena saw him ruled out of consideration for Didier Deschamps' squad.

That is no longer the case, but Kanner told radio station RTL: "I think when you sign up to the code of ethics of the France team, you have to respect that and I do not think those conditions have been met in the matter of Mr Benzema."

Deschamps indicated on Sunday that he would be open to selecting Benzema once again. He names his squad on Thursday for upcoming friendlies against Netherlands and Russia.

"I have a principle: whoever the player, I will defend him," Deschamps told L'Equipe. "I have said already, Karim made a mistake [but] there is a presumption of innocence.

"My goal is to have the best team and therefore the best players."

Kanner insisted he respects Deschamps' stance and said: "The coach wants to have at his disposal the best French players -- that is his position.

"My position is that of a sports minister who believes players must set an example and human values must be taken into consideration. But I am not the France coach."
