Olivier Giroud's France display vs. Serbia defended by Didier Deschamps

France coach Didier Deschamps has defended Olivier Giroud after he missed several chances and was booed by the home fans during their game against Serbia on Monday.

The Arsenal striker, 28, endured a miserable evening, passing up a series of first-half opportunities and losing possession in the build-up to Serbia's goal in France's 2-1 victory.

Les Bleus won the match thanks to a brace from Blaise Matuidi, the second of which was a breathtaking volley from outside the box that was clocked at 105 kilometres an hour.

Giroud touched the ball just 16 times before being jeered by the home crowd in Bordeaux when he was replaced by Karim Benzema after 62 minutes.

"It's a collective effort and he contributed too," Deschamps told a postmatch news conference.

"He was unlucky as well because the keeper made a superb save. He had three chances with one shot off target and a header that went wide.

"Obviously if he was more efficient we would have been a lot further ahead but he put in a lot of effort.

"Olivier knows it -- he's the first to be sad about not being able to be effective but it happens.

"When it's not Olivier, sometimes it could be Karim. But the collective effort was of very high quality."

Giroud, who has scored once in five appearances for Arsenal so far this season, feels he is strong enough to recover from the experience.

"When you play as a striker you're applauded when you score goals and when the opposite happens, people are unhappy," he said.

"It won't be the last time but I've already shown that I have the mental strength to come through it each time. I'm going to take refuge in my work and I'll bounce back -- I'm not worried."

Mathieu Valbuena, who is from the region, felt that by heckling Giroud, the home supporters present in Bordeaux had not matched the team's efforts.

"The public were not up to standard with the whistles heard during the match," he said.
