Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been dropped as a co-commentator by French TV station TF1, according to widespread reports in French media.

Wenger, 64, was conspicuous by his absence alongside former World Cup winner Bixente Lizarazu and main commentator Christian Jeanpierre on the national broadcaster on Thursday ahead of France's friendly with Spain, which Les Bleus won 1-0.

According to reports in Le Parisien, the station has decided not to extend its contract with Wenger, who had served as co-commentator on France matches for a number of years.

The paper reported the decision was taken "much to the surprise" of the former Monaco coach.

Wenger did work for the station during the World Cup in Brazil, but his dress sense and understated delivery drew criticism.

"His improbable white shirt with the French flag on it is made from an as yet unidentified material," the Nouvel Observateur wrote in its assessment of French TV's World Cup coverage in which it gave Wenger four out of 10.

"Clearly, Arsene Wenger buys his players and his clothes through the same supplier. For the rest, the Arsenal coach remains desperately monotone and laconic in his contributions."
