Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu has been called up to the France squad for the upcoming friendlies against Spain and Serbia, replacing the injured Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny.

Mathieu, 30, joined Barca from Valencia for 20 million euros this summer, and has started both of his new club's La Liga games to date.

The news was confirmed in an official statement released by the Catalan side soon after Sunday's 1-0 win against Villarreal.

"Jeremy Mathieu will join up this Monday with the French national team camp after having been called by Didier Deschamps to take the place of Arsenal defender [Laurent] Koscielny," the statement read.

Koscielny, 28, was forced to come off during the Gunners' 1-1 draw at Leicester on Sunday following a clash of heads with Jeffrey Schlupp.

Euro 2016 hosts France are to play two friendlies during the current international break, at home to Spain in Paris on Sept. 4 and away in Serbia on Sept. 7.
