Eric Abidal: My time with France is over

Eric Abidal has followed the lead of Franck Ribery in withdrawing himself from selection for the France national team.

Abidal, 34, picked up the last of his 67 caps for France in their World Cup playoff first-leg defeat in Ukraine last November.

The new Olympiakos' man's display in the 2-0 loss in Kiev, coupled with unconvincing performances for Monaco last season, led to Didier Deschamps leaving the experienced defender out of his World Cup squad.

Speaking to Catalan radio station RAC1 the former Barcelona defender, who has continued his playing career despite having a liver transplant in 2012, revealed he had hoped to bring down the curtain on his international career by playing in Brazil.

"My time with the French national team is over," he said. "It was a disappointment not to be at the World Cup, because I wanted to finish on a high note.

"If I have battled as I have through to today, it was to say goodbye to the national team at the World Cup. But that didn't happen."

France reached the quarterfinals in Brazil with Raphael Varane and Mamadou Sakho as their first-choice pairing in central defensive, while Patrice Evra started all but one of their five games at left-back.
