Flamengo have hired Oswaldo de Oliveira to replace Cristovao Borges as coach following the latter's resignation on Thursday morning.
Borges, who had taken command of the Rio de Janiero giants in the wake of Vanderlei Luxemburgo's May dismissal, asked to be fired the morning after Flamengo's disappointing 1-0 loss to arch-rivals Vasco da Gama in a Copa do Brasil quarterfinal first leg on Wednesday.

Oliveira, a former Club World Cup and Brasileirao winner with Corinthians in 2000, was announced as Borges' replacement later in the afternoon. It is his second spell at the club.
Along with the major titles at Corinthians, the 65-year-old Rio native has the distinction of being one of the few to have managed all eight of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo's top clubs, which consist of Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama in Rio, and Corinthians, Palmeiras, Santos and Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo.
Oliveira's most recent stop before the Flamengo appointment was at Palmeiras, where he was fired in June after a string a poor results.
The man he replaces at Flamengo lasted just 18 games at the helm, and was dogged by mounting criticism of his tactics and substitution patterns amid inconsistent results.
The 56-year-old former Vasco, Fluminense and Bahia coach was routinely booed and verbally harassed by fans during home games, which came to a head in his side's disappointing defeat to last-placed side Vasco on Wednesday night.
Borges leaves Brazil's biggest club with a record of eight wins, one draw and nine losses.
Flamengo currently sit 13th in the Brasileirao standings, and next play host to Sao Paulo at Maracana on Sunday.
